"Created in prison cells under the harshest conditions, these works reveal a striking mix of resilience, sorrow, and surprising optimism. Part of the Art Against War festival, this exhibition invites you to feel the powerful human spirit that endures, even when freedom is taken away".
The Art, Unbridled. exposition shares drawings by young Belarusians imprisoned for daring to believe in freedom, fairness, and a world without war.
This collection, selected with the help of Viasna (Spring) — a human rights organization led by Nobel laureate Ales Bialiatski, who is himself currently jailed — brings us right into the courage and hope these individuals hold onto, even in the face of unimaginable hardship.
FYI: The saying on the table cover (on the picture) says: "Pushkin got released out of prison!!". Ales' Pushkin, the author of the picture and the artist, well known in Belarus, got imprisoned on 30 March 2022 for a five-year term. On July 11, 2023 he was urgently transferred from a prison facility to a hospital where he died. The artist's dream, illustrated on the picture, will never come true.
Art Against War is a multifaceted art project, taking place in West Hollywood, CA. It calls on everyone to focus on the creation in peace instead of conflicting.
The Art, Unbridled. is an excerpt of the PrisonArt on-line archive of artworks by Belarusian political prisoners, dozens among hundreds imprisoned after the events of 2020. The works were drawn in pre-trial detention and while serving terms in penitentiaries, and later mailed to the prisoners' family members and friends. The human rights organization Viasna in Belarus collected the pictures from open sources to preserve them as important evidence of the nation's struggle for freedom, democracy and human rights.
A statement from VIASNA:
The purpose of this virtual gallery, which contains drawings by political prisoners, is quite simple: to preserve the history of what occurred in Belarus in the 2020s and to record how many talented people were unjustly imprisoned for the courage to stand against the regime and express their dissent.
Drawing while imprisoned serves as a way to pass the time, provides psychological relief, and documents the conditions of confinement, the surroundings, and events that take place during incarceration. After the start of the war in Ukraine, some prisoners began to draw related themes, such as the anarchist Sergey Romanov, despite the pressure and growing danger.
The drawings were collected by Viasna ("Spring") from open sources whenever possible, and some works were also passed on by the relatives of political prisoners and some by the artists themselves—after their release. Unfortunately, it’s already known that many artworks were destroyed by prison officials.
Viasna is one of Belarus’s oldest and most renowned human rights organizations, which has been documenting human rights abuses in the country for many years and providing assistance to those repressed.
Since 2021, when the organization’s leader, Ales Bialiatski, and his colleagues Valentin Stefanovich and Vladimir Labkovich, were imprisoned, Viasna has been forced to relocate almost entirely out of Belarus to continue its work both nationally and internationally.
Please, support the efforts of Viasna fighting for freedom and fairness in Belarus
We believe that when people create together, it becomes difficult to remain enemies. Collaboration fosters trust, a sense of safety, and ultimately, happiness.
